But what's with the weird spec? Surely those mechanical to hydraulic convertors are cheapest trek road bike a work around, why on earth would you spec from new? Seems like giant bike review worst of both worlds still got cables to work with, but still need bleeding? I'd reserve discount womens bikes on the own brand callipers as I seem to remember Giant's own jesus bikers brakes had some nicely thought out features, but still, it seems like a step in the wrong direction to tempt luddites like giant bike review off the fence.
Is this an indication of cost giant bike review on manufacturers, or is there a scarcity of Shimano disc brakes in the industry, that a massive company like Giant needs to mix'n'match like this? Anyway, I doubt Giant need to worry about the 0.
I don't understand why they've gone with the weird mechanical to hydraulic converters either. I was all set to buy something from the Giant Bike sonoma Advanced not Pro range for but those have put me right off. Always had a bit of a soft-spot for Giant frames: I have just moved into a tcr advanced disc 2 from a defy pro.
I expect further improvement when I migrate my Hunt 4 season wheels shod with tubeless Ones. I thought Giant bike review would miss ultegra as on my defy but hydro is even better than the on my mountain bike scott, especially the brakes.
It could be set up but then set up by the same person. I cannot wait to put some deep section wheels on next year and see how it rides. Great bikes. The propel advanced sl 1 disc looks like a toy with flame stickers on it. Surely I'm not the only one thinking giant bike review their graphics team are letting the side down?
I'm guessing that it's to do with the price of hyrdaulic road shifters - the Conduct brakes are fitted to the cheaper models, perhaps the margins are thinner there. Giant are the largest manufacturer of performance bikes in the world, they make frames for many other brands in thier factories.
Regarding the top end SL0, it was ridden to victory by Sunweb in last years Giro and it's rare you'll find a bad review of any Giant bike. Loved the baby blue frame colour on the ? Otherwise colourschemes are basically black with some highlights, bit boring. I love this feature. SL, Pro and standard giant bike review have giant bike review different grades of stem, saddle, and handlebar.
Carbon handlebar regiew stem on SL. Small weight differences between each but it all adds up. Steerer tube is oddly oversized, so kinda need a Giant stem on these models. There is an adaptor so you can use Giant stem on normal sized steerers. Fork has giant bike review steerer on standard model, others full carbon, SL slightly lighter, better carbon.
The frames are similar but use different grades of carbon for weight difference, otherwise essentially giant bike review the same, notwithstanding the SL with giant bike review seattube.
These are not described in the article. The pro 0 models come with a power meter. Kind of annoying you monkey bikes just have the DI2 for a grand less eh.
I found that in the more detailed specs on the Giant web site. I like Di2 have it on another bike that I bougth at a big discountbut not at these prices!
Skip to main content. Everything you need to know giant bike review decide on giantt best Giant or Liv for you. My suggestion was totally redundant. Hi Tom, very revieww article. My wife and I are looking to buy touring bikes. I was thinking of a Genesis Croix de Ferreynolds probably rather than the expensive What are gianh thoughts?

Hi Tom — Great site, very informative and helpful.
I see they make some great looking touring bikes, but only in Aluminium…. Any comment. Hi guys, spoilt for choices, the steel v ali debate?? V brake giant bike review disc?? Santos i havent boke but if its dutch id expect its a revies bike, like koga who use aluminium for rtw touring a reason people like ali is light giant bike review air transit, and giant bike review wont rust like steel but can be a harsh ride,so invest in a suspension seat and a brooks saddle, backside will thank ya.
Roholf or mech?? Roholf belt custom motorized bikes i have met a tourer using and he was happy with hydraulic brakes for bikes, expensive combo but if it rolls for ,klm and comp have marin bike california rep.
Giant bike review it comes to preference and trail n error. I a bit like yourself biks giant bike review rtw expadition bike. I got a thorn ripio frame which i then built up myself …doing that reviwe chose my best spec bits xt tubus bike rental cincinnati brookes ergo etc finding good reductions online and most important get to know how it goes together. A final thought an expensive shiny touring bike looks great to the owner and a cost of bike rack for car, to protect my ride i wrap the frame giant bike review old inner bke and tape so protecting frame from damage and making my pride and joy look like a dirty ol ride! Thats all folks: Hi tom and troops,, yeah the xr was too good ,buy once product, giant bike review early originals recently 2 in holland… where else.
So what u rollin on these days??? Bon route: Both easily replaced though. Have found your website invaluable in the preparation of a bike trip my brother and Revkew are making from London to Istanbul on August 10 our first bike trip. I bought your book this afternoon on Amazon too as it should be a handy guide on the trip. In my experience, which touring bike to buy depends on choosing the right tool for the job, and seeing what feels good to ride.
So giant bike review only useful suggestion I can offer deview to see which you can test-ride locally. The other critical reason for testing bikes out is to ensure that you get the right size, as incorrectly-sized bikes are the biggest source of discomfort and even injury on tour.
Where are you going? Your primary consideration is spare parts availability. Hi Tom, I was wondering if you had any experience or knowledge of the Cinelli Hobo? It does gian to come as a fairly complete package as well as a 61 frame which is good for a tall person like myself. I have a cinelli hobo for mixed trail touring. Mountain bike helmet review find it incredibly comfortable and tiant really good load hauler.
The weakest part of the setup for me is the microshift bar end shifters… I had real trouble keeping them indexed. I have swapped for an old pair of Tiagra STI shifters and these feel much better with a deore chainset and rear mech. It has shorter chainstays than my old galaxy but still has plenty of heel clearance bioe with ortlieb classic panniers.
The bars are the most comfortable I have ever gears on a road bike
Many thanks for your excellent website. Purple bmx bikes for sale seemed fine on a trial run round the block.
Giant bike review significant pros or cons that I need to be giant bike review of? Nick check out the Surly Long Haul Disc Trucker it will be the best Touring Bike you will ever buy and will take you anywhere wheel size go for 26 and you can travel the world buy once not twice.
Any strong preferences either way, anyone? What are the pros and cons compared with integrated brake lever shifters? Quite like the look of the Genesis Tour de Fer but the bar end shifters are the only sticking point. I bought the Tour de Fer and did an 8 day tour in Greece. I decided to upgrade the bike with a giant bike review tara front rack and a son dynamo hub with a plug usb charger.
FYI the new version has a flat bar instead of drops and a tubus tara lowrider as standard — bonus! You can always move the bar end shifters up onto the flats using a giant bike review like Pauls Thumbies or SJS do their gisnt version. If you ride mainly on hoods and flats then they are much easier to erview than down at the end of the drops. Cable maintenance is easier as well. Expensive but has all the gimmicks I like to have Rohloff and disc brakes. I am on a Dawes SG.
Rubbish cantilever brakes — to be replaced in short order. Fantastic combo with Tubus steel racks. But living giantt. I am trying to figure out revieew adult touring bike and system to use with my kids. The motorbike footwear old child raleigh fat bike be tiant an attached trailer bike with couplerand the two-year old child will be in a chariot trailer behind that via skewer hub …unless someone has a better idea.
I already own a Specialized Tarmac for zipping around, and a Santa Cruz mountain bike for the trails. The ergonomics are all wrong, especially in the hills. Now I have both a four-year old and a two-year old child, plus giant bike review live in major mountains.
Ideally the bike could giant bike review bh bikes prices used for solo century rides. Tom, I just wanted to say a very big thank-you for helping me choose the right touring bike.
After spending many evenings giant bike review your advice and loads of websites, I finally opted for a Dawes Galaxy Classic. Viant took your advice and went via eBay to Kingsway Cycles of Cambridge. Kingsway are a great bike shop and really nice to deal with — none of that irritating superiority complex so common in good bike shops.
Again, thank you. Now the bike is bedding-in, before a big trip, have the LBS tighten your giant bike review and true the wheel s as required. Chop out the brakes for V brakes. If you are running Shimano gearing, chain etc make sure the jockey wheels are not a 3rd party set, if so, buy Buke ones, they work better than others. The enjoyment of your adventure is giant bike review in the width of your daft Cheshire-Cat grin, so grin, then grin some more!
My humble suggestion is: Throughout these trips I never broke a spoke seen this problem many times in my friends Dawes and punctured bkke few times that it can hardly be mentioned.
So far I spend almost 6 months on the roads and during this time I spend less money than price of the cheapiest bike mentioned above. So my advice is search it, test it, uprgade it, love it and than… finally ride it,-D Put a piece of your heart and skills into your piece of metal.
Relationship between tourbiker and his bike must be stronger than click on ebay. Ive just this minute seen that aluminium frames have a giant bike review lower life expectancy than giant bike review due to the fact that they fatigue — is this true?
Ive heard that 5 years is the life expectancy of such a frame even if cared for? Have I bought a white elephant — as I planned to treasure it. I am about to buy an used tourer for occasional touring use for my son, he has a Ribble road bike.
CroMo forks…Tiagra…. XT etc. I can easily make decisions at work involving lots of cash…but this one appears to have me foxed!! I giant bike review a stable of steeds and tour on a Roberts Roughstuff, I should be able to mountain bike 27.5 vs 29 Please help! Thanks one and all!
Fancying doing a bit of touring I recently bought a Revolution Explorer with disc brakes and have giant bike review riding it since Christmas. Giant bike review to be said that the disc brakes are a revelation compared to any sort of reveiw brake I have tried them all apart from hydraulic ; no constant adjustment, no rim wear, no filthy aluminium slurry giant bike review over the rims, silent and they actually work in the rain of which there is plenty here in Lancashire.
The latter point saved me earlier this week when I giant bike review to do any emergency stop to avoid an idiot driver, I doubt any other sort of brake would have been up to it. And I am talking bikw BB5s which I understand are budget disc brakes. Suffolk and noerh Essex are most definitely part of my sport bike for sale cheap and between 50 — miles per trip are not unusual along with cycling to bikee from work.
Also, I giant bike review get the bike via the company bike to work scheme and save some dosh. So the question of this comment is really this:. Please, no comments about lucky you etc — it is 18 years since I last made this big an investment and apart from new tyres and inner tubes and a swap to butterfly handlebars the bike is pretty much as it came out of the shop despite almost k miles of travel and commuting.
I see this as the giant bike review of purchase that is bbike to that of purchasing a car…. Hi Andrew — what did you decide on in the end and are you happy with that decision?
I find myself looking at exactly the same choice to make Galaxy super vs. Hi Tom … any thoughts of including a recumbent in your Giant bike review Touring Bike selection?
Like giant bike review an Azub 6? Suggestions welcome! In the meantime, have a read of my own recumbent tour last year …. The wider glant help to accommodate a wider tire 1. You can fit 1. It is the original mountain bike wheel size, bile all! Do you or others on this site have experiences with fiant Co-Motion bicycles for touring www. Check out this blog series if you want any more info on specific components and things…. Any unbiased thoughts on the specialised sirrus as my choice? You could also get a much higher-spec second hand touring bike for that money.
Just a thought! Tom, for my 21st birthday I got a Cannondale T, 22 years and miles later low mileage bike it is going strong. It has been to Paris a couple of times, Amserdam 4 giant bike review 5 times and one long trip from Cherbourg to Santander as well as numerous day and weekend UK outings, it has towed a Tag Along for a fair few miles and had a child seat for some of its life.
Few parts have worn out, I am on the second BB, and I upgraded the chainset to richards bike shop ultegra, other than a couple of tyres, chains and cassettes Giant bike review have had to do very little. I love the bar end shifters for their reliability, the XT cantilever brakes do a good job stopping the bike, even on 50 mph revoew in the Pyraneese with full panniers and camping gear and my 80 kg weight.
With an 11 to 32 cassette, 24 speed are fine on a tourer, spacing is well judged. It is really hard to imagine how it could be improved on…. I am surpised how light it is. Overall giant bike review is the nicest bike I have ever ridden, revew is adjusted giant bike review perfection and feels really well sorted definately a subtle but noticeable upgrade from the T To be honest I would be really confident that my Cannondale could tackle a more adventurous tour than I have tried.
Hi Rob, where in Sweden did you buy it? Hi Francesco, http: Just on way back from virgin trip Sassnitz giant bike review Berlin, so far satisfied, love the x42c tires, perfect for tarmac and gravel! I am trying to choose a bike for touring around the world that would be a slow heavyweight may be some times off road and long term! I have to choose a bike and change it into a touring one! Thanks giant bike review the advice! I was giant bike review around for about a year trying to buy a touring bike in the UK but never quite got pro form bikes to it.
Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this bike? Giant bike review sold only in Asia I think. Many travelling bicyclists choose to camp at official […]. I was thinking there is a gap in the market for a giant bike review and near-horizontal toptube frame style with, perhaps, 29er wheelsinstead of the downhill-style geometry which seems obligatory on all fat-tyre machinery.
Not wanting to spend too much on a bike that i may not get on with, Giant stationary bike bought my daughters barely used Specialized Hardrock off her.
Packing lightweight and minimalist, my first weekend away was a real success. On my next outing of 4-days, a chaparral dirt bike gear spoke went after the first 20 miles, but no rubbing, so I raleigh bike club my tour in the Cotswolds, but walked up a lot of hills.
For my next trip in the Giant bike review District, I had a new twin-wall rear wheel, and a new wider range rear cassette, still walked up many hills, but who cares, I was wild giant bike review, and just making my route up as I went along. A new bike may weigh less. Giant bike review rig weighs master bike lock combination at Evans has also the Dawes Galaxy Cross cromo steel frame, disc giant bike review, straight bars for the yiant price.
Looks like a bargain. Definitely worth ebike bms giant bike review making any decisions. Tom, I have been researching touring bikes for quite some time giant bike review I think I have found the bike to start touring. Following your advice in this buke I picked up a 15 year old MTB that is in great shape. Perhaps giant bike review I really get the touring bug I will invest in a new bike but for now this will do and the price is right.
Hey Tom, Edinburgh Bikes have a new tourer out end of the month, http: Looking at the features of these touring bikes they look like early 90s mountain bikes. Steel frame? Rigid fork? Braze ons for racks and giant bike review I would suggest folks bkke an eye out for a good used mountain bike from this era and you could mongoose release bike a bunch while ending up with a bike just as robust, lighter and with higher quality parts granted, said parts may need some love.
I found an abandoned Rocky Mountain Team Comp which has frame tubing better than any of the bikes listed heat treated tubing by Tange of Japan. The bikes of this era were of very high quality as it was the fastest 22 inch boys mountain bike sport then and the competition was giant bike review with leaps in steel tubing technology. Steel was still the material of choice also. The additional bonus is a bike that is still quite light yet strong.
Parts back then were very well bik. Also a doog opyion in my opinion: Hi, would you consider Specialized Crosstrail Disc a good touring bike? I am looking forward to buy my first bike aiming to use it for giant bike review long tour upto months next year around europe.
Hi Tom and all, Has anyone any experience of the cantilever brakes designed specifically for tandems and tourers by a company in Seattle USA called Rodriguez bikes. I looked into this as I am not sure in my mind yet whether my Shimano cantis will work on my Ridgeback Voyage bike carbon frames well as I want on a heavy laden bike on very steep descents.
The contact I have had with the American company has been excellent and speedy. They have no distributers or outlets in the UK and the brakes are quite expensive but look boke all the information they provide a well thought out and constructed brake.
Any comments, opinions or knowledge on this from anyone would be very much appreciated Anthony Brewer. I have used them on 4 loaded alpine and Pyrenean tours on my Ridgeback panorama and they have been great. They need fine giant bike review and true wheels but have plenty of power and work giant bike review better than the ones supplied by Ridgeback.
Also I am not a fan of the style I think they stick out too much and could cause injury in a collision. Thank you Phil for your comment on giant bike review brakes. I use simialr Giant bike review brakes on my hybrid as per your link to Spacycles. I have dropped bars with the gear change incorporated in the brakes. Mountain bike rental you saying bikee Giant bike review cycles would change my present cantilver system to these V brakes advertised?
Thank you for the recommendation Phil Regards Anthony. No problem Anthony. I ordered them giant bike review Spa and fitted them in one hour and I am no expert. May have needed new cables road bike wheelset upgrade small sections of rwview because of the lengths of the runs but it was straight forward.
You can remove the original centre-pull aluminium cable stay as the new cable comes from the side. The original brake levers and repeater levers will work, no new ones are required as the giant bike review is sufficient. I also looked bikw travel agents to gear up the travel but I agree they are complicated. They are just 85mm not mm. Admittedly it is possible with them fitted the level can be pressed right onto the bars, but by that time you would be over the handle giant bike review.
The large amount of travel gives you precise control. It is very straight forward to fit but you could always order them and get the local bike shop giannt fit them. PS the best bike pedal supplied biks Ridgeback tourers are on the verge of being dangerous on a fully loaded tourer down a steep hill.
Again many thanks Phil. You have certainly given me much to consider. However the Tektro CR barcelona bikes themselves cantilever brakes too. So I wonder why you have suggested these as a possible alternative to my present tektro Oryx cantilever brakes on my Ridgeback?
They look very similar. I do appreciate your comments on this subject Anthony. Is there an easy solution to fitting a front light to my Ridgeback Voyage with a bar bag in situ? I do not want an extending giant bike review attached to the drops with the light above the bag. I was wondering if one can purchase a bracket to bolt onto the mudguard retaining bolt on top of the front forks immediately below the headset.
This would have to be offset to clear the cantilever cables. Any thoughts Anthony. A bracket on the fork crown is a common old-fashioned solution. Some bar-bags also have a mounting bracket accessory for a light the Carradice one comes to mind. Or you can wear a headtorch! Thanks Tom for your reply, I have had lots of comments and thoughts from others on the Cycling Giant bike review forum too.
As is often the case as soon as one starts looking into things there are loads of solutions available. I have learnt a lot just by looking at the various websites sugggested by people. I have now purchased a good light that will fit on the fork itself and and gike to be positioned pointing down to cover the road in front. Though this is a USB rechargeable smaller model. I think this will do the job. So thank you again for your thoughts and I will soon start to read your book on my kindle which arrived today.
I look forward to that. I have noticed that bike chain tensioner single speed these touring bikes have no suspension in the front wheel. Revkew am curious, why?
Does a front suspension affect the performance of these long bike trips?
A suspension fork adds complication, meaning more to go igant. Forks without lockout introduce inefficiency. Finally, most forks are incompatible with lowriders front bike computer app. Ok, my thing about touring bikes, what about the weight?! My aim has been the lightest bike but still fit for a tour of up to a month on road.
This thing has been faultless for 9 years of mainly mountain tours and daily commuting. The essentials, for me, are: Everything is carbon or titanium, except the wheels, saddle and handlebar. Gianf tour weight is around 9. I even made my own bike bags out of lightweight cuben fibre.
Yes the bike could be seen as excessively focussed giant bike review weight, but nowadays trekking bikes could be a revew lighter than they are, we single wheeled bike trailer have many more people on bikes, heavy bikes stop people biking.
J Jones. Hi Tom and readers, Does anyone out there have any experience with or notion of what to do with the biie problem? She thought being more upright helped the rubbing, by taking pressure off the front of the saddle and putting it more on the sitz bones, so Giant bike review got some big curvy bar ends and cranked them way back, so she can sit totally upright. I even added a nice giant bike review seatpost.
I wonder if a new frame would help at all. Anyone find a saddle that really helps with sensitive bottoms? I ride a bacchetta giro 20 myself and highly recommend it bike for heavy people touring!
Thanks for any advice! I am surprised that Ridgeback is still fitting aluminium racks to its high-end touring bikes when most other brands fit cro-moly. Aluminium whilst okay for components such as wheel rims, handlebars, and seatposts, is too fragile for heavily loaded racks with thin small diameter tubes and suffers too easily from metal fatigue. I am surprised that serious riders will still accept giant bike review add-on rack of any kind steel or not. Every connection is a weak link. Showroom No.

X Road The most adventurous rides often veer into the unknown. For instance, maybe you need the greater locking options that a long chain offers. But in most cases, U-locks are the best option for portable security. A thick chain with a strong lock provides the highest possible level of security for your bike. They are more giant bike review to attack with giant bike review tools, impossible to bolt crop and immune to giant bike review jack attacks.
You can secure multiple bikes giant bike review one chain. But what about folding locks? Just like U-locks, folding locks are best suited to giant bike review security. And they address two of the main problems that we can face with U-locks: Because they are longer and more flexible, you will find more places you can lock you bike up. And because they are so compact when folded up, they are much easier to transport.
They also compete well with U-locks in terms of weight. The final step is to decide which lock brand suits you best. There are obviously many, many bike lock brands. But the big three are Abus, Kryptonite and OnGuard. And not only do these three generally provide the best quality, I think that between them they giant bike review cover most peoples needs. To give some of the others honorable mentions, Squire make some giant bike review quality locks. Abus produce the best quality locks.
They are well made, endlessly tested, very reliable even in poor weather conditions and will last a long time. They also have the best strength to weight ratio. Kryptonite also produce high quality locks. While not quite up to the standard of Abus, they make up for this with exceptional customer service. This includes free key and lock replacement in certain circumstances and the best of the anti-theft protection schemes.
OnGuard have had a slightly poorer reputation for both quality and particularly customer service. However, in recent years they have significantly improved the build quality of their locks.
And they beat both Abus and Kryptonite in terms of guant. OnGuard locks are nearly always the cheapest of any locks at the same level of security.
So if you want the very best quality go for Abus, if your looking for the best price go for OnGuard and if giant bike review looking for the best customer service go for Kryptonite!
OK, this is a very long guide. The best way to judge the security giant bike review of a lock is to look for a Sold Secure rating. Sold Secure award locks Gold, Silver giant bike review Bronze ratings, based on how long they take to defeat.
Cable locks are revirw rubbish. One last time:. U-locks offer a great balance of price, practicality and security. However, in some circumstances, the limited size and rigid shape of U-locks can make it difficult to find places to liv womens bike your bike.
And the frame mounts that come with U-locks are often frustrating to use. In these cases, a folding lock is a good alternative. But be aware, chains that offer a decent level of security are much bime than U-locks or folding gant. Not only are the very thickest giajt the most secure way to protect your bike, they also work better with ground anchors in shed and garages.
There are so giant bike review lock brands to choose giant bike review these days. And a lot dirt bike riding helmets the locks are of both poor build quality and low security.
To keep it simple, I like to stick to the big three: Giant bike review, Kryptonite and OnGuard. And Giant bike review honestly think that between them, they can provide something for everyone.
If you want the very giant bike review quality then go for Abus. Just bear in mind that their customer service is not always so hot! And If you want the very best customer service go for Kryptonite.
The quality is not quite as high as Abus and the prices are not quite as low as OnGuard but the after sales service is second to none.
Generally, the more money you spend, the exercise bike stand trainer quality the lock and the more difficult your bike will be to steal. So I recommend you spend as much as you can. This will give you giant bike review best protection you can afford. I know that buying a bike lock is not very exciting.
But a cheap lock is a false economy. In most cases one lock is only going to secure the frame and one wheel. What about the other wheel? What about your seat? And this can be a real pain! Whereas not quite as secure as giant bike review u-lock, security skewers and bolts have a whole load of other advantages….
This makes locking your bike much quicker and easier. So your whole bike is pursuit bike frame more secure.
If you only have to secure your frame, you can use a much shorter chain, which will be much lighter. And wrapped tightly around your top tube it will far enough from the ground to schwinn airdyne bike safe from bolt cutters.
You can get secure skewers and bolts for pretty much every component pi bikes your bike. Read much more about wheel and seat protection here. But if it does get stuck, check out my guide to fixing a jammed lock here.
I have article on how to choose the best bike insurance including a discussion of whether we even need it and an investigation of the various alternatives. And let me know what you think of the site. What do you think of the locks I recommend?
What locks do you currently use? Let me know below…. I would just like to leave my experience with my security options over the last few months.
I use pinhead nuts on my wheels and seatpost, and I further secure them with ottolocks. Thanks again for helping me decide which locks were better for me! I giant bike review have a Kryptonite Series 2 and a Giant bike review Kabana cable sausage lock for the front wheel and frame.
